Defenders' Day, observed annually on September 12th, is a significant holiday in Maryland celebrating the successful defense of Baltimore against British forces during the War of 1812. This pivotal event inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that would eventually become the United States national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."
